TypeCon ’09, Identity System

UC.DOD | TypeCon 2009 Identity Program
It’s been a while since my last post, for the past few weeks I’ve been having some fun trying to figure out some things with typography and web design, like I’ve said many times before, you simply never stop learning…Anyhow, Here I’d like to share last year’s Typocon identity system as designed by UC.DOD. Simply fascinating and worth taking notes from.

“The Web 2.0 Look” Takes a new Direction

ono_european_phone_company_ad

Web 2.0 is huge these days. As we all know, social network sites like Facebook and Twitter have catapulted communications to a whole new level. For many designers, the term web 2.0 also makes reference to a certain look that has become quite common now, must specifically, I’m making reference to those graphics we often find on web banners and interactive buttons that project rich, colorful blends, which evocates a perfect, plastic or crystal texture. Here, on this post, I’d like to illustrate this observation with this really cool ad that was designed to promote a communications company in Spain. I don’t recall seeing this effect applied to a splatter before (as I’m sure it won’t be the last time either) so far, it has mostly been applied to symmetrical shapes, so it’s cool to see that the web 2.0 look has began to emerge into different directions for a change.

Ingrid Bergman: An Indulgence from Old Times Cinema

Check out this awesome DVD cover, isn’t great? Perhaps I think it is simply because sometimes I have the brains of an old geezer…Truth is I like watching old movies, and for a number of reasons I tend to prefer the ones in black and white. Everytime I watch them I learn a thing or two about light and shadow, soft edge and hard edge and so forth… Anyway, when I spotted this DVD I couldn’t help being attracted to the picture on the cover, as is not common to see images of Ingrid Berman being so defiant! Obviously I’m not advocating for cigarettes, nor I’m a smoker anymore, I just love her gaze, the way she’s wearing her hat just as much as she’s being hit by the light. By the way, the movie is really good too, I won’t be surprised if someday it gets re-adapted.

Modigliani, Painting Scene :
The Exuberance of the Creative Process

I’ve always wanted to watch this film since the first moment I learned about it a couple of years ago. Ironically, just as I was looking for something else I finally had the opportunity to get my hands on it. In the same fashion of other great films like Lust for Life , The Agony and the Ecstasy, Artemisa, Frida and Goya’s Ghost; Modigliani is a movie depicting the life of a great artist, Amadeo Modigliani, one of my all time favorites. Though the script is widely fictitious, nonetheless it doesn’t fail to inspire anyone who cherishes art. Here, in this scene, we see Modigliani along with Picasso, Rivera and others, working on their submissions to the Annual Art Competition in Paris. This film projects how Modigliani and his friend and rival Pablo Picasso believed that competitions lowered the standards of true artists like themselves, however, being seriously ill and penniless, with a pregnant wife and new born baby, Modigliani signs up for the contest and is by followed Picasso, which results in the outburst of excitement in the Paris art world. This scene is very touching, as it’s an analogy to what’s involved in the creative process.

Children at Play: The Medieval Artists

hrblog_medieval_manuscript

I love looking at Medieval Art; it’s like looking children figuring things out by trial and error. For a new comer like me, whom is constantly thinking nonstop about design and fighting constant frustration, To look at the work of medieval artists is quite an inspiration, as their work is an epiphany to hard work, constant attention to detail and the assurance that their work serves a purpose that is far stronger than their skills.
