García Márquez:
A Typographic Portrait

Once I was trying to figure out whose face was that being illustrated on the cover of Book Review, a weekly supplement by the NY Times I often like to inspect in search for inspiration, I couldn’t help drawing a smile on my face as soon as I discovered it was Gabriel García Márquez, a world famous writer and fellow Colombian who I greatly admire. The Illustration is completely executed using letter forms, all sharing the same scale and belonging to the same Roman family, some are blurrier than others, giving the illustration a sense of depth as well as an association with fast typing. The illustration is credited to Rodrigo Corral and Ben Wiseman, and its purpose is to promote a new biography written by Gerald Martin. –Though a little squint may be necessary to read his resemblance, what better way to design a writer’s portrait than using letter forms?
