Apple Ads, Less is More

As I was scavenging for content, I came across with a cool post on webxpedition18.com featuring some ads Apple have published over the years. Sure, some are just plain hidious, but some, specially the later ones, are quite pleasing to the eye; but above all, a gasp of fresh air to the brain. Continue reading

Re-branding the US Dollar

I first saw this US dollar design by Dowling Duncan on designboom.com and was immediately impressed with his design for the $5 bill, just because it would be really nice to finally see our ancestors being acknowledged in that kind of way. In the article, he explains the creative process behind his designs:”We wanted a concept behind the imagery so that the image directly relates to the value of each note. we also wanted the notes to be educational, not only for those living in america but visitors as well (…)they are then overprinted with informational graphics or a pattern relating to that particular image.

Vulnerable, Yet Strong

Ringo Starr, "Y Not" album Cover
I love it when a design solution seems too obvious but then it isn’t. Take a look at this album’s title for instance, the phrase “Y Not” seems vulnerable and small, and yet it demands our complete attention by being in complete power, all thanks to the surrounding negative space framing it! …A clear sample that shows how bigger is not always better.

The Ishirian Test:What do you see?

Shape and Color

What follows, is a direct quote from Foundations of Graphic Design, an old Design text book I found recently, definitely an interesting exercise

The Ishirian test, developed in Japan, is administered internationally to determine colorblindness. If you read the number 74 in the above right circle, you have normal color vision, but if you see the number 21 you have a red green deficiency, the most common form of colorblindness. If you are colorblind, you will see the number 2 in the lefthand circle, and if you have normal vision, you will not be able to clearly distinguish any number.

Grace with no Motion

Social AwarenessPolitical Poster

Inevitably, poster design is now a major art form. Museums from all over the world are paying big bucks for original prints. After all, how can any museum call itself modern without a descent poster archive? What follows is a conjunction of quotes from Taku Satoh, a Japanese Designer who’s interview is featured in Graphis 2010 Poster Annual:

These days, where the media is usually in an interactive form, I feel that a two dimension poster has a power of its own (…) A motionless media can be full of grace, and it spells out determination

Mills & Boom, an English publisher, have been famous for the publication of romance novels since the early 1900s. Their business began to take shape just about the same time when the need for book jacket design was becoming more popular. Like other publishers, Mills & Boom standardized their packaging design in order to stabilize and promote their brand. Through a book cover, publishers can target a particular audience or specify a particular literary genre.
Here are some of my favorites, each one of these was created in the 60s, I particularly found it interesting how these book covers not only resemble movie posters, but also movie stars of the time.
